根据南非种族隔离期间，一桩真实的人质劫持事件改编，不过与当时的实际情况有很大出入，属于对历史的再创作，掺杂了很多剧组单方面的理想化的虚构。
为了体现国家机器的愚蠢无能，导演让突击队发动了自杀冲锋。为了展现白左的伟光正，导演杀了司法部长的女儿。
