The Freebie centers on Darren (Shepard) and Annie (Aselton), a young married couple with an enviable relationship built on love trust and communication. 是大脑的电影，而不是手的。这对玩牌的手，虐囚的手，杀人的手，在荧幕上近乎隐身。是禁止运动的电影，停滞的电影。布列松的手凿，摸，偷，是欢愉的手，冲动的手，而施拉德的手是冷漠的。大张旗鼓地包起所有家具，简朴到铺张，也背离布列松本意。刻意低调的表演不过是一种赘饰。

全片明暗摇曳、压抑隐忍，加之男主角着实冷峻，紧绷绷地透着无限内心交战，可惜了这位扑克精算师，最后再度身陷囹圄；所幸音乐足够煽风点火。

导演试图通过此片来演绎津巴多在《路西法效應》一书中所揭示的“情景力量场域”及其阴暗心理，电影用相对软化的无限德州扑克赌局来替代伊拉克阿布葛拉伊布监狱中的那种场域，而男主角则是以一个耽溺于小赌养生的“创伤后自了汉”在被“唤醒”后一举卸下心防，克服魔障，自行判罚，剪除祸乱。
